  • Author: Sophie Monet
  • Total Time: 70 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings (1 gratin dish) 1x

Description

A hearty and comforting gratin made with layers of tender potatoes, savory ground beef, and melted cheese. Perfect for family dinners, it is simple, budget-friendly, and always satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale

450 g ground beef

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped

2 garlic cloves, minced

45 medium potatoes, thinly sliced

180 g shredded cheddar cheese

50 g grated parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning

½ teaspoon paprika

Salt, to taste

Pepper, to taste

120 ml beef broth or water

60 ml milk (optional, for creaminess)

Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 190°C and grease a 23×33 cm baking dish with olive oil or cooking spray.

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, about 5–7 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.

  • Stir in chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook for 3–4 minutes until onion softens and becomes translucent.

  • Spread beef mixture evenly at the bottom of the baking dish. Layer thinly sliced potatoes on top. Season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and paprika.

  • Sprinkle cheddar and parmesan over the potatoes. Carefully pour beef broth or water around the edges. Optionally drizzle milk for added creaminess.

  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and continue baking for 15–20 minutes until potatoes are tender and cheese is golden and bubbly.

  • Let rest for 5 minutes, garnish with parsley if desired, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Add extra vegetables like zucchini or carrots for more nutrition.

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute beef with mushrooms or lentils and use vegetable broth.

  • Use different cheeses to adjust flavor intensity.
