Description
A hearty and comforting gratin made with layers of tender potatoes, savory ground beef, and melted cheese. Perfect for family dinners, it is simple, budget-friendly, and always satisfying.
Ingredients
450 g ground beef
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
4–5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
180 g shredded cheddar cheese
50 g grated parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
½ teaspoon paprika
Salt, to taste
Pepper, to taste
120 ml beef broth or water
60 ml milk (optional, for creaminess)
Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 190°C and grease a 23×33 cm baking dish with olive oil or cooking spray.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, about 5–7 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
Stir in chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook for 3–4 minutes until onion softens and becomes translucent.
Spread beef mixture evenly at the bottom of the baking dish. Layer thinly sliced potatoes on top. Season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and paprika.
Sprinkle cheddar and parmesan over the potatoes. Carefully pour beef broth or water around the edges. Optionally drizzle milk for added creaminess.
Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and continue baking for 15–20 minutes until potatoes are tender and cheese is golden and bubbly.
Let rest for 5 minutes, garnish with parsley if desired, and serve hot.
Notes
Add extra vegetables like zucchini or carrots for more nutrition.
For a vegetarian version, substitute beef with mushrooms or lentils and use vegetable broth.
Use different cheeses to adjust flavor intensity.
